Lunar Eclipse

I woke up around 1:00 am on October 8th to see the total lunar eclipse or Blood Moon. This was the second eclipse in a tetrad, a series of four consecutive total lunar eclipses in 2014-2015. It was pretty cool to watch. I was up for about 2 hours and watch the penumbral phase and watched the total eclipse phase in. And because I had school the next day, I opted out of watching it phase back out. I was able to get some pics of it. I was taking these through a window so the moon is doubled in some of them.

I woke up just after it started.

You can see where the penumbral is phasing in and then where the moon is starting to turn red.

                                        Almost gone.....                                 Nearly there....

Blood Moon!

The moon in the morning when I went to work.

Just one of those little things in life that was pretty cool to witness. Next I want to see a total solar eclipse!

Berry Pickin' and Fishin'

One afternoon Ashley and I went cranberry picking with a couple of the high schoolers. We walked out on the tundra and around this big lake. We walked a good bit and I was quite tired by the time we started to head back. The thing about walking on the tundra is the ground is not solid (until it freezes) so its kind of similar to walking through sand or mud. And there is a lot of mud so you actually walk through that too. Lucky for me another student joined us and he had his four wheeler. Let's just say I didn't walk ALL the way back to the village. :)

I don't think I have ever seen water so calm in my life.

Ok, so one really cool thing is that a lot of the lakes and ponds can be pretty shallow, but they look really deep. We got down in this lake and walked out maybe 15-20 feet and it only went just past my ankles.

                                                         Our lovely guides!

Another day, Caitlyn and I, went for a walk to see Dirk, who was fishing on the river. I can not say enough about how beautiful it is out here. It is so nice and the scenery is amazing!

                                                          Caitlyn and Katja

All of Eek, well what you can see from the river.

Dirk fishing.                                Katja is Dirk's dog.

She is such a cutie!

Ashley and Misty picking berries.

Trying my hand at fly fishing! It's a work in progress...

I marvel at the beauty that surrounds me everyday. There has not been one day that I've regretted my decision to move to Alaska. Yes I miss my family and friends, but I absolutely love it here. I've created friendships with some really amazing people and I wouldn't trade this opportunity for the world.

September New Teacher Inservice

Part of our contracts as new teacher is that we have to go to Bethel one Saturday every month in September, October, and November. All of the new teacher fly in Friday night and go home Saturday evening. We had our first one about four weeks ago and we have another one this weekend.
At the September inservice we talked about standards, content, planning, and we chose sessions to go to based on our content areas. I went to a Mathematics and a Science session. They were both really great and I learned a lot about what I can do with the online resources and how to structure my class. We also did some really fun activities, one being The Marshmallow Challenge. Click the link and check it out we all had a blast doing it. The inservice this weekend will be on CHAMPS. This is a classroom management program that is used in the district.

I snapped some photos as we were heading home.

This was the biggest plane I had seen since I arrived in Bethel. It is called a caravan and it holds nine passengers plus luggage. It even had steps to get into it.

The Eek and Quinhagak gang! Getting ready for take off!

The Bethel tarmac and view of the airport from the air.

We all had a pretty good time! I always enjoy getting to see all the other new teachers and catching up. More posts to come!

District Wide Conference in Bethel

This is a little behind, but I still want to write about it. We had a District Wide Conference in Bethel September 2nd-5th. The first two days were like a pre-conference then the last two days were the actual conference. I want to start by saying the Lower Kuskokwim School District really knows how to do trainings, conferences, and any professional development related things.
The district took care of everything from our travel, meals, and accommodations. There were around 300 teachers from all over the district. Pretty much everyone was there. So not only did we get some awesome professional development, we had the opportunity to meet a lot of different people. I also got to catch up with the other new teachers that I met at New Teacher Inservice.
The first two days I went to training for the Scholastic READ 180 System. We have implemented that into grades 3-8 at Eek School. I will make another post on that. They had some trainers from Scholastic come in and give us all the info we needed to use the system. Unfortunately, all of us teachers from Eek were delayed getting into Bethel because of fog. One thing about living in the bush, weather controls just about everything. Especially air travel. We were supposed to leave about 8 or 9 in the morning and didn't get into Bethel until about 2:30. So we missed a lot of our session on the first day, but we were able to get caught up and we have figured out a lot of stuff on our own.

It was pretty foggy.

The last two days of the conference I had four sessions to go to. The district assigns sessions to teachers in different grade levels or fields. It is all very organized. I had three required Math sessions I had to go to and then I had a free session where I could pick anything I wanted. At first I thought, uh Math all day, but my sessions were great and I learned a lot.
The first session I had on Thursday was Hands on Equations (click the hyperlink if you would like to know more). This is a hands on way to teach students Algebra and encourages Mental Math. You use a scale, number cubes, and pawns to visually represent and balance equations. It also focuses on Student Centered Learning. It was a really interesting session and I am hoping to implement this into my classroom eventually.
Then I went to a session on using the new Math Standards and Materials. We use the Glencoe Math books that use the Common Core Standards. The instructor in this session showed us how to set up and use the online components to the book. She showed us some of the different things we can use and do with the students. I also learned a lot in this session and it help me to figure out what online resources to use for the book.
My last required session was on using Best Practices Teaching Mathematics. We talked about all the Best Practices and then we did some hands on activities. And just like our students we were easily distracted by fun things! :)
The session I got to pick on my own was on Cooperative Learning Strategies and it was pretty awesome! We learned a lot of different grouping and learning strategies. I can't wait to use some of them. One thing I really loved about the session is how the instructor showed us how you can use content to get students into groups or pairs. And the best part is the students don't even know they are learning while they are doing something as simple as getting into groups.

Sitting in one of our sessions.

My friend Heather, she teaches in Quinhagak.
(They had Gold Fish snacks and we were really excited!)

Haha see what I mean! We got a little distracted.

Altogether, it was a really great week and I learned so much and met so many great teachers! Then it was time to head home, rest up, and plan for the next week.

Love the plane rides here, so beautiful!

Beautiful Tundra

Just thought I would post some pictures that I have taken. I have seen some of the most beautiful sunsets and views and want to share them. The tundra may be flat and never ending, but it has a beauty of its own.

The sunset setting on my camera really brought out the colors.

Panoramic, turned out pretty cool. There was a storm rolling in.

Small sign of fall.

Some days it just takes my breath away! You haven't seen a sunset until you've seen one on the tundra. My camera does not do it justice. I will leave you with a little poem.

One Sun,
Setting behind a great expanse of reflections.
Staring back at me,
Gazing upon the never ending calm.
The cool breeze colors my face,
Blush of the fading sun.
Beautiful Tundra.
